Composite Bonding in Huntington, NY
If you’ve been considering how tooth bonding could improve the look of your smile, you may have some questions about the process, how it works, and when cosmetic bonding is necessary. Here’s what our dentist Dr. Marshall Polan wants you to know most about this popular cosmetic treatment, so you can decide whether it’s the right option for you.
What is dental bonding?
We apply a tooth-colored resin to the tooth and mold it to hide imperfections and problem areas. Once we’ve finished molding and shaping it, we will direct a special light over the tooth to harden the resin and bond the material to your natural tooth.
What does dental bonding correct?
If you have any of these common dental problems, you may want to consider cosmetic bonding:
- Teeth that are chipped or cracked
- A discoloration or stain in a tooth
- Short or misshapen teeth
- Small gaps between teeth
Ultimately, dental bonding is an easy and painless way to alter the appearance and shape of your smile. In fact, the resin we use for dental bonding is no different from the material we used to fill a cavity.
Tell me about the dental bonding procedure?
One of the advantages of this cosmetic procedure is that it’s non-invasive. That means little tooth preparation is needed beforehand and no anesthesia is necessary (unless we are filling a cavity).
First, we will match the resin to the rest of your smile, so the material closely resembles your own natural teeth. Next, we rough up the surface of the tooth and apply a liquid that will help the bonding resin stick to the tooth. Once this is complete, the resin will be applied to the tooth and shaped accordingly. When the desired shape is complete, a laser will permanently harden the material to the tooth to give you a flawless smile.
How long will the procedure take?
Since there is no anesthesia and only minimal prep needed, the whole process can take anywhere from half an hour to an hour, per tooth.
